CN contracts Roche Ltd. to inspect Quebec Bridge

CN recently awarded a contract to Roche Ltd. Consulting Group to perform an engineering inspection of the Quebec Bridge, which spans the St. Lawrence River between Quebec City and Lévis, Quebec.

Engineering firm Modjeski and Masters performed the last comprehensive inspection of the structure in 1994, prior to major rehabilitation work that was completed from 1997 to 2005. CN later inspected the superstructure and performed annual periodic inspections of the bridge’s railway portions. In 2006, an independent audit conducted by Modjeski and Masters determined that the bridge is in good structural condition and will remain a viable structure for the long term, CN officials said in a prepared statement.

To begin this month and conclude in October, the latest inspection will provide the engineering department a detailed assessment of the bridge and its structural components, including an ultrasonic inspection report, according to the Class I.

CN has maintained the historic bridge since 1923. However, the railroad is a minority user of the structure — only four CN trains cross the bridge daily vs. eight VIA Rail Canada Ltd. passenger trains and about 35,000 motor vehicles, the Class I said.
