UP's PRB coal train loadings climbed in May

In May, Union Pacific Railroad loaded 896 coal trains in the Southern Power River Basin (SPRB) vs. 887 trains in May 2009.

There were 106 missed SPRB loading opportunities last month, 69 of which were attributable to utility plants, 19 to UP and 18 to mines, according to the Class I’s weekly coal train loading performance report. However, missed loading opportunities were partially offset by 103 extra loadings.

UP also loaded 191 coal trains in the Colorado/Utah region last month compared with 193 trains in May 2009. Origin demand was lighter because of customer maintenance outages and high stockpile levels, UP officials said in the report.
