South Carolina ports authority, warehouse operators team up to target rail-served export cargo

The South Carolina State Ports Authority is partnering with 14 rail-served warehouses in the Charleston area to attract certain export traffic through the Port of Charleston and boost port volume. The warehouses, which maintain 2.7 million square feet of storage space, are served by CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern Railway.

Recently, the port’s export volume has risen sharply because of the recovering global economy, a weak U.S. dollar and increased demand for products used to produce or package import goods, according to the ports authority, which owns and operates seaports in Charleston and Georgetown, S.C.

Commodities targeted by the public/private partnership include cotton, lumber, woodpulp and food products. The partners plan to transload the commodities.
