Inland port plans advance in Georgia

The Cordele-Crisp County Industrial Development Council (IDC) and Cordele Intermodal Services Inc. (CIS) recently signed agreements to build and operate an $8.6 million intermodal terminal in Cordele, Ga.

The Cordele Inland Port will be constructed and operated under a public-private partnership between the council and CIS, which will serve as the facility's operator.

In the planning stages the past seven years, the terminal will be built in two phases, with the first phase involving a 42-acre site owned by the IDC. The council plans to hold a groundbreaking July 14 for the first-phase facility, which is designed to handle 20,000 lifts annually and slated for completion in fall. The second phase would expand the terminal’s annual capacity to 100,000 lifts.

The Cordele Inland Port will provide direct rail service for containers moving to and from the Port of Savannah via Cordele. Overnight service for container traffic moving between the terminal and Savannah will be provided by the Heart of Georgia and Georgia Central railroads. Final moves into Chatham Yard at the Port of Savannah will be handled by CSX Transportation.
