On June 20, Union Pacific Railroad began a more than $20 million project aimed at bolstering a 25-mile line from west of Grand Island to Gibbon, Neb.
To be completed in late July, the project calls for removing and installing new rail and more than 64,500 concrete ties; spreading more than 84,000 tons of ballast; renewing roadway surfaces at 26 grade crossings; and installing six switches.
During the project, UP will use its TRT 909 track renewal train, which can install rail and concrete ties in one pass. The train features 30 rail cars, which each can haul 210 concrete ties.
