MIT, Maher forge pact for new Nova Scotia terminal

Melford International Terminal (MIT) and terminal operator Maher Terminals recently reached an agreement under which Maher will become a shareholder in and provide services for a new container terminal near Melford, Nova Scotia.

The $350 million, 315-acre Maher Melford Terminal will include an intermodal on-dock rail facility served by CN and be part of a 1,500-acre logistics park. CN serves Nova Scotia via its East Coast mainline, which is fully cleared for double-stack service, according to MIT.

Under a first phase, which is expected to be completed in 2013, the terminal will have the capacity to handle 1.5 million 20-foot equivalent units annually.

Maher Melford Terminal will be an East Coast version of Maher’s Fairview Terminal in Prince Rupert, British Columbia, a CN-served facility that opened in 2007, said MIT President Paul Martin in a prepared statement.
