• VTG Aktiengesellschaft signed a contract to purchase 1,100 grain rail cars from Ermewa Ferroviaire SAS and to buy a 75 percent share in French rail logistics company TMF S.A.

• Knorr-Bremse AG recently opened a new rail vehicle systems plant in Budapest, Hungary. The facility will produce bogie equipment for rail vehicles, such as brake caliper units and block brakes, and brake control components. The new plant also features expanded facilities for research and development.

• Harsco Corp. announced that Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Salvatore Fazzolari also will serve as president. Fazzolari has served Harsco for 30 years. The company also appointed Stephen Schnoor treasurer in addition to his duties as senior vice president and chief financial officer. In addition, Richard Sullivan was named chief supply chain officer and will continue to serve as vice president of business transformation; Galdino Claro was named executive vice president and group CEO for the company’s Harsco Metals and Harsco Minerals groups; and Scott Jacoby was appointed VP and group president of the Harsco Rail business group.

• Vertical Transportation Excellence (VTX) has been contracted by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) to assess, maintain and repair elevators and escalators maintained by WMATA. VTX also was contracted by the Anaheim, Calif., city council and Orange County Transportation Authority to design vertical transportation systems for the new Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center. The facility is expected to be completed in 2013.

• GATX Corp. recently received the Responsible Care Partner of the Year award from the American Chemistry Council (ACC). The Responsible Care program is designed to bring chemical producers and their suppliers together to demonstrate a common commitment to improve industry safety, sustainability and overall performance, according to the ACC.

• RailPros Inc. appointed David Obedoza to its signal and communications design and construction management division in the Los Angeles office. Obedoza previously served as signal and communications manager for Caltrain.
