Union Pacific Railroad plans to spend about $9 million to upgrade an 85-mile stretch of track between Ogallala, Neb., and Cheyenne, Wyo.

To be completed by mid-September, work is divided into two projects on track sections between Ogallala and Julesburg, Neb.; and between Sidney, Neb., and Cheyenne.

The projects call for removing and installing about 59,000 ties, replacing 3.5 miles of rail on various curves. spreading more than 42,000 tons of ballast and replacing surfaces at 50 grade crossings.

The maintenance-of-way projects are part of UP’s $2.6 billion capital spending budget for 2010.
