Coming soon: Iowa rail port, Nebraska grain shuttle

On Aug. 20, Iowa Gov. Chet Culver and Union Pacific Railroad officials broke ground for the Lincolnway Rail Port in Clinton.
The $10.8 million rail port — which obtained $2 million in stimulus funds administered through the state of Iowa — is expected to attract businesses that manufacture wind turbines and blades because of the facility's access to the Mississippi River, a UP mainline and total of three rail lines.
The rail port is slated for completion in about one year. An adjacent industrial park that might cover more than 1,000 acres is scheduled for completion in early 2013.
Meanwhile, Gavilon Grain L.L.C. announced plans to build an 800,000-bushel grain elevator near Benkelman, Neb. The 110-car BNSF Railway Co. shuttle facility will feature truck unloading capability and a high-speed grain dryer. The facility is expected to receive corn by October and be fully operational by July 2011.
