The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) has moved up in the Partnership for Public Service’s “Best Places to Work” rankings for the federal government. The department placed 26th out of 32 federal agencies ranked in the 2010 survey, a 15.8 percent increase compared with the 2009 rankings, according to the USDOT.
During the past year, the USDOT initiated a series of town hall meetings with employees nationwide to learn their concerns; focused on the competencies of first-line supervisors in the areas of effective leadership, empowerment, employee engagement and ethics; and included an employee satisfaction goal in all senior executive service performance plans.
The agency also called on administrators to meet regularly with employees, focus on leadership development and internal communications, and create tailored action plans, which included measurable benchmarks.
“We are committed to our employees and to creating a workplace where they are valued and feel good about coming to work every day,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood in a prepared statement.
About 67 percent of the USDOT’s employees completed the survey for the Partnership for PublicService, a non-profit organization that aims to transform the way the federal government operates.
