Union Pacific Railroad announced it will resume a double-track initiative on the Sunset Route in the southwestern United States.
By year’s end, UP plans to complete nine miles of double-track in Imperial County, Calif., and another nine miles in Maricopa County, Ariz.
The $18 million project is part of UP's $2.6 billion capital spending budget for 2010. The Class I plans to complete more double-track work on the Sunset Route next year.
To respond to increasing traffic volume, the railroad needs to add capacity on the 760-mile corridor between Los Angeles and El Paso, Texas, UP officials said in a prepared statement.
