Union Pacific Railroad recently donated $33,000 to Michigan Tech University's Rail Transportation Program, the fourth consecutive year the Class I has supported the program, according to the university.

UP seeks to fill 200 positions and had representatives at Michigan Tech’s fall career fair last week. The Class I was one of a dozen rail and rail-related companies that recruited employees and interns at the fair, according to the university.

“We've gotten some really good hires from the [rail transportation] program,” said UP Recruitment Manager Sharyn Crawford-Jones in a prepared statement, adding that the program offers “great academics and excellent hands-on experience."

UP’s ongoing commitment is essential for the program’s growth, said Rail Transportation Program Director Pasi Lautala.

“We are looking forward to expanding and strengthening our collaboration to yet another level,” Lautala said.

In addition to recruiting new employees, UP is trying to enlist more new business. To help do so, the Class I is running its first national advertising campaign in nearly a decade to promote the railroad’s door-to-door shipping logistics expertise. Launching today, the television, print and online ad campaign includes the tagline, “Wherever you find business, you’ll find us.”

“It is the most comprehensive ad campaign in Union Pacific’s 148-year history to specifically target new business growth,” UP officials said in a prepared statement.
