• Four Class Is have outfitted locomotives with GE Transportation's Trip Optimizer software, resulting in 3.3 million gallons of fuel saved over 5 million service miles "run in advisement and automatic control," according to a prepared statement. Trip Optimizer is designed to calculate the optimal speed profile for a trip based on a specific train's makeup and route, and automatically control the throttle to maintain that speed and save fuel. For the four Class Is, Trip Optimizer collectively generated fuel savings of about 7 percent and a corresponding reduction of more than 37,000 tons of CO2 — the equivalent of taking more than 7,000 cars off the road or planting more than 10,000 acres of forest, according to GE.

• Stantec Inc. acquired Street Smarts, a transportation and civil engineering firm. Terms of the transaction — Stantec's ninth in 2010 — weren't disclosed. Stantec's transportation group provides planning, engineering and infrastructure management services for the rail, transit, aviation, bridge and roadway sectors.
