On Oct. 18, the Railway Association of Canada (RAC) announced winners of the 2010 rail safety and environmental awards during the North American Rail Summit 2010 in Montreal.
The awards “recognize the outstanding safety and environmental developments for rail services and promote the activities of operators to improve on the stellar environmental and safety performance of the Canadian rail industry,” according to RAC.
Canadian Pacific received the RAC Safety Award in the Class I category for its Sprain/Strain Injury Risk Reduction Toolkit initiative, an employee-driven program designed to educate workers on sprain/strain injury risks and how to prevent them.
In the non-Class I category, ArcellorMittal won the safety award for its New Welding Shop Lay Out Initiative, which uses an in-house rail-car side frame positioner and a slat system to form protective walls that prevent weld splattering.
RAC also presented its Environmental Award in the Class I category to CN for developing a Walleye Spawning Grounds Initiative. The railroad worked with a First Nation group to introduce a new concept in environmental mitigation for rail work that includes the use of local rock/ballast and the development of a fish nursery.
GO Transit/Metrolinx received the Environmental Award in the non-Class I category for installing bicycle racks on trains operating on the new Niagara Falls service.
