DG’s Computerworld recently ranked Union Pacific Railroad on its list of the top “green” information technology (IT) organizations in recognition of the Class I’s efforts to implement environmentally friendly IT systems.

Since 2008, UP has increased its computing capacity by about 200 percent and disk storage capacity by about 700 percent, while decreasing data center energy consumption about 14 percent, according to the railroad. The Class I also has implemented energy-efficient HVAC and building automation controls, power management software and server virtualization systems; revised the data center layout to reduce power demand; and employed alternative energy supplies, such as solar, to power IT systems.

In addition, UP trains employees to consider the power efficiencies of new or replacement hardware, or green equipment options.

Meanwhile, Newsweek magazine recently ranked UP No. 368 on its annual list of the nation’s top 500 greenest companies.
