In October, Union Pacific Railroad loaded 1,031 coal trains in the Southern Powder River Basin (SPRB) compared with 894 trains in October 2009.

During the month, UP logged 101 missed SPRB loading opportunities, 65 of which were attributable to slow unloadings at utility plants, 23 to mines and 13 to the railroad, according to the Class I’s weekly coal loading performance report. Missed loadings were offset by 109 extra loadings. Overall, UP loaded 101 percent of National Coal Transportation Association demand for the month.

In the Colorado/Utah region, the railroad loaded 206 coal trains vs. 217 in October 2009. UP experienced “sporadic production issues” on the North Fork branch and in Utah, according to the report.
