• Progress Rail Services Corp. has acquired C&S Signaling L.L.C., a rail signaling company based in Crestwood, Ky., that specializes in grade crossing warnings sytems. C&S will operate under Progress Rail’s signal division, which is part of the engineering and track services group. The acquisition “strengthens Progress Rail’s position in grade crossing warning system design, material management, and signal installation and maintenance,” according to a prepared statement.

• On Dec. 1, MTU Detroit Diesel marked the opening of a new engine plant in Aiken, S.C. The facility will produce MTU Series 2000 and 4000 diesel engines, primarily for the U.S. market. A manufacturing department for components is scheduled to launch operations in spring 2011.

• For its third fiscal quarter, which ended Oct. 31, Bombardier Inc. reported consolidated revenue of $4 billion vs. $4.6 billion in the third quarter of its prior fiscal year. Net income totaled $143 million compared with $168 million in the past fiscal year. Bombardier Transportation’s revenue tumbled from $2.5 billion to $2.2 billion. However, the unit’s order backlog reached a record value of $32.7 billion as of Oct. 31 vs. $27.1 billion as of Jan. 31, 2010. Order intake during the fiscal quarter totaled a value of $3.7 billion. “Bombardier Transportation had a good level of new orders with a book-to-bill ratio of 1.7,” said Bombardier Inc. President and Chief Executive Officer Pierre Beaudoin in a prepared statement, adding that a few “breakthrough orders” included the company’s first European order for the ZEFIRO family of high-speed and very high-speed trains, and a contract for a monorail system in Brazil.

• Siemens Mobility obtained an $87 million contract from Malaysian mass transit operator Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad to supply traction equipment and vehicle control systems for 38 six-car multiple units in Kuala Lumpur. The equipment includes transformers, power converters and traction motors.

• Thales España won a contract to automate grade crossings at stations in Treceño and La Molina, Spain, with a system of interlocked half-barriers, which face oncoming vehicular traffic on both sides. The work also includes the installation of warning devices and an automatic control system.

• Jerry Prock recently joined Encore Rail Systems Inc.’s sales team. He will be responsible for providing sales and service to Class Is, regionals, short lines and contractors in the western region. Prock has nearly 30 years of railroad engineering and maintenance-of-way experience.
