The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) recently approved construction authorization from the Ohio Rail Development Commission (ORDC) for the installation of flashing lights and mounted gates at six grade crossings.

To be completed by December 2011, the work will be done at CSX Transportation crossings in Milton Township and Richland Township; Norfolk Southern Railway crossings in Liberty Township and Lima; and Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway Co. crossings in Twinsburg.

The railroads must submit site plans and cost estimates to PUCO by March 8, 2011. Funding for the upgrades will be covered by federal dollars.

PUCO also approved construction authorization from the ORDC directing the Columbus & Ohio River Railroad to replace existing flashing lights and gates at a crossing in Newark by September 2011. In addition, the commission adopted an agreement with ORDC, the Indiana & Ohio Railway and Champaign County authorizing the railroad to install flashing lights and gates at a crossing in Champaign County by December 2011. Funding will be shared by PUCO, ORDC and the Indiana & Ohio.
