In November, not only did the U.S. Class I workforce grow on both a month-over-month and year-over-year basis, but so did all six workforce segments — the first time that happened in 2010.

As of mid-November, the Class Is employed 155,042, up 0.5 percent from October’s level and 5.4 percent from November 2009’s count, according to Surface Transportation Board (STB) data.

Transportation (train and engine) ranks swelled to 61,819, increasing 0.6 percent from October’s total and a whopping 9.5 percent from the year-ago level. Transportation (other than T&E) workers numbered 6,659, up 1.4 percent month over month and 1.5 percent year over year.

As of mid-November, maintenance of way and structures employees numbered 35,171, up 0.3 percent vs. October’s count and 4.8 percent vs. November 2009’s level. Maintenance of equipment and stores ranks reached 28,387, up 0.3 percent month over month and 0.8 percent year over year.

Meanwhile, professional and administrative staff totaled 13,856, up 0.4 percent compared with October’s count and 4.2 percent compared with November 2009’s level. The number of executives, officials and staff assistants reached 9,150, up 0.3 percent from the previous month and 0.8 percent from the year-ago level.
