Railroad Day on Capitol Hill rescheduled for July 2011

Railroad Day on Capitol Hill has been rescheduled from March 24, 2011, to July 14, 2011, in Washington, D.C., because of an unexpected congressional scheduling change, according to the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA).

Congress recently revised its session schedule and the week of March 21 now is a recess week for field work, meaning senators and representatives will return to their home districts, according to the association.

Railroad Day on Capitol Hill is organized by the ASLRRA, Association of American Railroads, National Railroad Construction and Maintenance Association, Railway Engineering-Maintenance Suppliers Association, Railway Supply Institute, Railway Systems Suppliers Inc., Railway Tie Association and other rail industry groups. During the event, hundreds of rail industry representatives descend on Washington to lobby for rail-related legislation and policy pursuits.

“We focused on rescheduling rather than canceling because the event is absolutely crucial to our ongoing success in working with the Congress and Administration in Washington, D.C.,” ASLRRA officials said in a prepared statement.

The ASLRRA plans to conduct a “fly-in” with its legislative policy committee in early spring on Capitol Hill to begin to elicit support from congressional members, especially those who “know little about the short-line industry,” the officials said.
