FRA develops model legislation to improve grade crossing safety

The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and several state officials have developed model state legislation for use in developing bills to improve safety at grade crossings without gates or barriers.

The legislation is intended to help states address obstructions that restrict a driver's view of an oncoming train, FRA officials said in a prepared statement.

FRA-submitted accident reports showed that between 2001 and 2005, 689 collisions, which caused 87 fatalities and 242 injuries, occurred at crossings with sight obstructions.

The Rail Safety Improvement Act of 2008 required development of the model legislation, according to the FRA.
