• Stadler Pankow GmbH and regional transport provider Veolia Verkehr Regio GmbH have signed a contract for the supply of 35 electric multiple-unit trains for the E-Netz Rosenheim rail network in Germany. The order, the largest in Stadler Pankow's history, is valued at about $276 million. The contract calls for the supply of seven three-carriage and 28 six-carriage FLIRT multiple-unit trains. The fleet, which will run in cross-border services on the Munich-Rosenheim-Salzburg, Munich-Rosenheim-Kufstein and Rosenheim-Holzkirchen-Munich lines, will enter service in December 2013.

• Midwest Railcar Repair Inc. has appointed David Smook president. He succeeds Greg Carmon, who is retiring. Carmon will retain ownership of the Brandon, S.D., company. Smook joined Midwest in 1995 as a welder, and over the years has served as a rail-car inspector, developed a quality assurance program, gained CWI certification in welding, and developed a computer program for rail cars.

• Gruppo Torinese Trasporti has begun fully automated service on a third metro line in Turin, Italy, using automation systems and rolling stock provided by Siemens Mobility. The new line runs south parallel with the Po River, and extends the existing Line 1 by two miles and six stations. There now are 29 automated trains from Siemens serving 21 stations over a distance of 8.2 miles, according to the company.

• Third-party logistics provider Logistics Management Solutions (LMS) has acquired McCann's Piggyback Consolidation Inc., an intermodal marketing company in Fenton, Mo. Through the acquisition, LMS will add intermodal services and create a new subsidiary, Freight Management Solutions, which will specialize in intermodal and freight brokerage services.  LMS acquired the firm to enable clients to benefit from rail transportation and gain access to all Class Is, LMS officials said in a prepared statement.

• Michael Baker Jr. Inc. has named Anthony Zbierajewski senior rail systems construction manager, technical consultant II. Based in Seattle, he will be responsible for growing the rail and transit practice in the Northwest and providing technical assistance to the firm's national rail transit initiative. Zbierajewski has more than 22 years of experience in major transit and mainline railroad transportation projects.

• Kelso Technologies Inc. has received Class F certification for its production facilities in Bonham, Texas, from the Association of American Railroads through March 3, 2017. The certification covers the manufacture, recondition, repair, retest or qualified tank-car service equipment. The facility assembles, tests and certifies up to 4,000 tank-car valves per year, according to the company.

• Railservice Inc. has selected James Street Associates as its marketing communications agency for the Railserve LEAF® GenSet Locomotive. James Street will implement a strategy to increase awareness of the “environmentally friendly and efficient” locomotive, Railserve officials said in a prepared statement.
