Union Pacific Railroad plans to spend about $19 million to upgrade a 33-mile line from Groveland, Kan., to 10 miles southwest of Hutchinson, Kan.

The project calls for removing and installing new rail, renewing surfaces at 53 grade crossings and replacing 14 switches.

The work is part of this year’s $3.2 billion capital spending budget, which provides funding to enhance the safety and efficiency of UP’s 32,000-mile network.
