Transportation Community Awareness and Emergency Response (TRANSCAER®) recently presented 2010 TRANSCAER National Achievement Awards to seven railroads and chemical companies. The awards recognize their efforts to help communities prepare for and respond to hazardous-material transportation incidents.

The 2010 winners are BNSF Railway Co., CSX Transportation, CN (CN’s Dangerous Goods Team), Norfolk Southern Railway, Union Pacific Railroad, DuPont CAER Car Program and the Dow Chemical Co. Last year, BNSF conducted major training tours and outreach programs in eight states; CSXT held 59 first responder training classes, five crisis management exercises and two live drills; the CN team trained 5,020 emergency responders during 257 TRANSCAER events in North America; NS trained more than 5,000 emergency responders in 92 cities and counties; and UP held 61 training events and trained more than 3,300 emergency responders.

TRANSCAER also presented 2010 Regional Achievement Awards to state TRANSCAER teams in California, North Carolina and Pennsylvania. In addition, the organization named Dave Buccolo of the Central California Traction Co., who serves as TRANSCAER Region 4 coordinator, and David Binder of Tanner Industries Inc., who chairs the 2011 Anhydrous Ammonia Tour Curriculum Development Committee, as recipients of the Chairman’s Award. Buccolo attained the honor for the second consecutive year.
