The Transportation Services Index (TSI) declined 0.5 percent in May to 108.4 compared with April’s index of 109, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS). But on a year-over-year basis, the TSI climbed 2.2 percent.

May’s Freight TSI of 105.6 fell 1.8 percent from April’s level, tumbling for the second straight month. The index rose 1.4 percent compared with May 2010’s mark, but remained below the early recession level of 110.2 in May 2008 and the recent May high of 111.9 reached in 2006, according to the BTS. In 2011’s first five months, freight shipments measured by the index dropped 1.2 percent as freight shipments declined in three of the four months prior to May.

May’s Passenger TSI of 116.3 increased 2.8 percent from April’s level and 4.2 percent from May 2010’s mark.
