Last week, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) released “Public Perceptions on Transportation Characteristics of Livable Communities,” a report that outlines the findings of a 2009 survey. BTS asked 1,000 participants about the importance of different transportation features to their communities. Among the findings: More than two-thirds of respondents said reliable long-distance rail or bus transportation, local transit and bike lanes were important.

BTS also released the 2011 edition of the National Transportation Atlas Databases (NTAD), which features “substantial” revisions to railways, waterways, national parks and the Federal Highway Administration’s National Bridge Inventory. The NTAD also includes intermodal terminals, national grade crossings, non-attainment areas, and transit-rail lines and stations.
