Progressive Railroading has announced that U.S. Rep. John Mica (R-Fla.), who chairs the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, will deliver a keynote address Nov. 1 at 9:15 a.m. (EDT) at RailTrends® 2011, which will be held Nov. 1-2 at the W New York Hotel in Manhattan. Mica’s current priorities include the passage of a new surface transportation bill and advancement of stalled projects. He supports U.S. high-speed rail (HSR) development, but has raised questions about how high-speed stimulus dollars have been distributed. Mica also favors implementing “true” HSR in the Northeast Corridor. In May, Mica and U.S. Rep. Bill Shuster (R-Pa.), who chairs the House committee’s rail subcommittee, called for legislation that would separate the Northeast Corridor from Amtrak's operation so that a public-private partnership could design, build, operate and maintain the corridor's HSR service.
