NS to power Ohio yard's wastewater treatment plant with wind

Norfolk Southern Corp. plans to build a 50-kilowatt wind turbine at its Bellevue, Ohio, yard to power a wastewater treatment plant — one of a few railroad facilities to be powered by wind, according to NS.

Supplied by Entegrity Wind Systems, the turbine features three 24-foot rotor blades mounted on an 80-foot tower. The turbine will generate more than 100,000 kilowatt hours annually to power pumps and control at the plant, which treats water used at the yard's maintenance facilities and rainwater runoff.

"Norfolk Southern is assessing opportunities to utilize alternative renewable energy sources where practical," said Vice President of Safety and Environmental Chuck Wehrmeister in a prepared statement. "We are looking at other facilities ... to take advantage of wind power."
