Last week, Union Pacific Railroad announced it set a new seven-day coal train loading record in Wyoming’s Southern Powder River Basin (SPRB), moving 284 trains out of the basin Nov. 22-28. So it comes as little surprise that the Class I set a monthly coal loading record in the SPRB in November.

UP delivered 17.9 million tons of coal out of the SPRB, surpassing the previous record of 17.1 million tons set in September.

“For three straight months now, we have consistently increased our South Powder River coal train loadings year-over-year and month-over-month,” said Vice President and General Manager-Energy Doug Glass in a prepared statement.

The Class I set several other SPRB records last month, too. UP loaded 1,159 coal trains, surpassing the previous record of 1,114 trains set in September, and a daily average of 38.63 trains, beating the previous record of 37.13 trains also set in September. In addition, the Class I set a single-day loading record of 46 trains on Nov. 29, surpassing the previous single-day all-time-high of 45 trains set on Sept. 29.
