North Star Rail Intermodal L.L.C. (NSRI) recently purchased RailRunner N.C. Inc.’s Terminal Anywhere™ equipment to install at an intermodal terminal NSRI is building in Montevideo, Minn., about 130 miles west of Minneapolis.

In spring, NSRI will launch a container service targeted at southwestern Minnesota farmers, processors and ethanol producers, who currently truck the majority of their agricultural products to a Minneapolis/St. Paul-area transloading hub.

Using Terminal Anywhere equipment, NSRI will shift container-carrying chassis to an intermodal rail car without cranes or other lifting equipment. Terminal Anywhere comprises custom chassis designed to accommodate 45, 48- and 53-foot domestic containers, and 20- and 40-foot international containers; intermediate bogies or trucks to provide rail support between two RailRunner chassis with air-ride suspension; transition trucks to connect RailRunner consists to a locomotive or standard rail car; and planning and support software.

Twin Cities and Western Railroad Co. will move containers from the Montevideo terminal to Minneapolis or St. Paul, where the short line will interchange traffic with Canadian Pacific Railway. NSRI recently partnered with ocean carrier Hapag-Lloyd Container Lines to move containers from Canadian ports to international destinations.
