Intermodal carloads handled at the Port of Naples, Italy, between January and October 2001 rose 10.2 percent compared with the same 2000 period, 7 percent compared with 1999 and 150 percent compared with 1998.
Ferport Napoli Srl, which manages the port's rail service, Dec. 31 reported 13,158 container moves between January and October. The company, which is 60 percent owned by manufacturer Serfer S.n.c. and 40 percent owned by the port authority, also reported 1,439 container moves in October alone compared with 1,250 moves in October 2000.
"The flow of rail cars is stable at 1,300 to 1,400 cars per month," said Pietro Capogreco, Ferport president and port authority general secretary, in a prepared statement. "This enables us to look to the future of intermodal with renewed confidence and [helps] us make the most of the potential of Naples' port within the Italian and European rail systems."
