The Port of Los Angeles last year handled a record 4.9 million containers, shattering its 1999 record of 3.8 million containers. Now it appears the port is poised to set another record by year-end.
Through November, the port handled 4.7 million 20-foot truck equivalent units (TEUs), increasing 5.8 percent compared with the same 2000 period, and in November alone moved 455,504 TEUs, rising 10 percent compared with November 2000's 414,028 TEUs.
The port also handled more imported (234,132 TEUs) and exported (89,680 TEUs) containers in November: imports rose 17.4 percent compared with last year's 199,387 TEUs and exports, 8 percent, compared with November 2000's 82,848 TEUs.
Meanwhile, the port so far during its fiscal year (July to November) handled 2.3 million TEUs — a 6.8 percent increase compared with a similar 2000 period.
