RailMarketplace switches gears on top executive search

RailMarketplace.com’s hunt for a top executive continues, but the search parameters have changed — the Class Is’ supply-chain exchange now plans to name a chief operating officer rather than a chief executive officer.
"RailMarketplace’s board is in the process of finalizing some key positions by the end of this month, including a COO," says Ashwin Upponi, RailMarketplace marketing and sales director. "The board plans to have a COO for now — I’m not sure of the board’s plans regarding a CEO."
Under the current plan, Union Pacific Railroad Assistant Vice President of E-Business Mark Davis would indefinitely continue his role as RailMarketplace’s interim CEO.
Founding partners Burlington Northern Santa Fe, Canadian National Railway Co., Canadian Pacific Railway, CSX Transportation, Norfolk Southern Corp., Union Pacific Railroad and GE Global eXchange Services still are in the midst of revising RailMarketplace’s deployment plans to offer rail industry suppliers and site users a wider set of core applications and services.
The site’s board plans to launch exchange functions and features in August.
RailMarketplace plans to offer supply-chain buyers reduced sourcing costs through improved spending controls, lower purchasing cycle times and a larger supplier base; by design, suppliers using the exchange would increase their customer base and reduce costs tied to sales, managing orders, and standardizing inventory and products.
