Steelroads.com adds bill-of-lading application

The Steelroads consortium July 11 launched a bill-of-lading application on steelroads.com, enabling shippers to prepare and send shipping instructions for non-hazardous materials to multiple North American railroads.
The shipping instructions tool, designed to streamline and simplify interline shipments, also enables users to build shipping profiles, use previously developed bill-of-lading patterns and transmit data through a series of screens.
Steelroads.com developer RAILINC produced the tool with the help of industry e-commerce consultants.
The Steelroads consortium — RAILINC, the seven U.S. and Canadian Class Is, the major Mexican railroads, and American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association and Railway Association of Canada members — plans to add other applications to steelroads.com this year, including an advanced tracking and tracing feature.
Steelroads.com currently offers routes and prices; equipment characteristics; railroad contact information and links; reference information, including stations, commodities and junctions; and shipment tracking and tracing.
