CPR to raise rates on four-fifths of open tariffs next month

It's been five days since Canadian National Railway Co. increased two-fifth's of its open-tariff rates 4 percent. In another 26 days, the other Canadian Class I will begin raising some rates, too.

On Nov. 1, Canadian Pacific Railway plans to increase rates 4 percent on about 80 percent of open tariffs, other than grain (grain rates are managed under a separate program).

CPR already increased some rates this year. Those that were raised less than 4 percent will be adjusted to reflect the new price-increase percentage level, CPR said in a prepared statement.

CN also began increasing open-tariff rates earlier this year — some as much as 10 percent — to offset declining financial performance, increasing operating costs and the strengthening Canadian dollar versus the U.S. dollar.

Although most U.S. Class Is haven't announced plans to increase rates, Kansas City Southern expects soon to raise rates an average of 2.5 percent to 3 percent, depending on the commodity, says spokesperson Doniele Kane.
