Transportation Services Index inched up in January

The Transportation Services Index (TSI) in January rose 0.6 percent from December's level to 112.9, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS). The index also climbed 1.4 percent compared with January 2012.
January's Freight TSI increased 1.2 percent from December's level to 111.3, marking the third consecutive month-over-month gain. On a year-over-year basis, the index — which measures changes in the output of for-hire, rail, trucking, inland waterway, pipeline and air freight companies — rose 1.3 percent.
"The TSI increase in January likely resulted from inventory growth. Wholesale inventories grew 1.2 percent during the month, according to the U.S. Census Bureau's Monthly Wholesale Trade report," BTS officials said in a press release. "The restocking followed the drawdown of inventories in the fourth quarter."
January's Passenger TSI of 117.3 dipped 1 percent from December's level but climbed 1.8 percent from January 2012's mark. The index includes data from air service, local transit and intercity rail providers.
