Rail News: Rail Industry Trends

KCSM, UP attain rail service honors

Industrias Kam, a transload terminal near Monterrey, Mexico, recently recognized Kansas City Southern de México S.A. de C.V. (KCSM) for helping to convert a large construction and mining equipment company's traffic from truck to rail.

As a result of synergies between Kam Industries and KCSM, the company will begin using the Class I's rail service and Kam Industries' transload services.

Because many of the company's steel components are oversized, KCSM worked closely with Kam Industries, forming a task force, carrying out test shipments and locking in the business, KCSM officials said in an item posted on the "KCS News" web page.

"This freight previously moved by truck and will now be moved on KCS," said Adriana Covarrubias, a KCSM official.

Meanwhile, Union Pacific Railroad last week received the 2012 Rail Carrier of the Year Award from WWL Vehicle Services Americas. The Class I has obtained the award for three consecutive years.

The award is based on such rail service provider criteria as transit and damage-free delivery performance.

UP serves a number of customers in the finished vehicle and aftermarket vehicle sectors. The Class I directly accesses five finished vehicle assembly plants, and operates or accesses more than 40 vehicle distribution centers.

In addition, BNSF Logistics L.L.C. presented its 2012 Carrier Excellence Award to Holland in the less-than-truckload category. The award recognizes carriers' on-time performance, capacity and overall customer service.
