Beginning Dec. 1, Union Pacific Railroad expects to gradually increase train speed through Marion, Ill., from 10 mph to 35 mph.

For more than a year, UP has enforced a temporary speed limit of 10 mph though the city because of poor track conditions, but the Class I recently improved the track and inspected all signals.

UP plans to increase train speed 10 mph the weeks of Dec. 1 and 8, and 5 mph the week of Dec. 15 to reach the new speed limit.

During 2003, the Class I has increased train speed in several communities – including seven Texas towns – after improving track and modifying grade-crossing signals.
