Last month, Intermodal Association of North America (IANA) presented its 2003 Silver Kingpin Award to Rail Management Services Inc. President John Gray during Intermodal Expo 2003 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The award recognizes an individual who’s made a career-long contribution to the intermodal industry.

While managing the Western Pacific Railroad’s piggyback business unit in the early 1970s, Gray designed and implemented a business model that became an industry leader, and continues to be a recognized standard today, IANA officials said in a prepared statement.

"[His] leadership and innovative approach to managing terminal services for America’s freight railroads has thrust him and Rail Management Services into being one of today’s leaders in the intermodal terminal-management services industry," IANA said.

During the expo, the association also presented its 2003 Intermodal Achievement Award to Pressure Systems International Inc (PSI). The award recognizes a public or private organization, or government agency that made the greatest contribution to advancing the intermodal industry during the previous year.

PSI developed the Meritor Tire Inflation System, which is designed to automatically maintain proper tire inflation using compressed air from a trailer air system. The system can help reduce truck-maintenance costs, in-service failures, fuel consumption and excessive tread wear, IANA said.
