Kansas City Southern recently was recognized as a certified member of the Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT) program by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection unit of the Department of Homeland Security.

A voluntary program, C-TPAT encourages businesses to ensure the integrity of their security practices and communicate security guidelines to supply-chain business partners. The program requires participants to analyze all areas of security, such as documents, information systems, employee and contractor identification, equipment and facilities.

In return, U.S. Customs ensures C-TPAT partners a faster release of goods at the border and prompt resolution of issues that might delay shipments.

"[Our] membership in C-TPAT demonstrates a solid and ongoing commitment to being the premier rail carrier in the rapidly growing NAFTA trade corridor," said Gerald Davies, KCS executive vice president and chief operating officer, in a prepared statement.

Fellow Class Is Burlington Northern Santa Fe, Canadian National Railway Co., Canadian Pacific Railway, CSX Transportation and Union Pacific Railroad already are C-TPAT members.
