Last year, Norfolk Southern Corp. helped locate 69 new industries and attract 20 plant expansions along its lines, representing $1.5 billion in industrial development and 85,000 annual carloads of new business.

The largest project — costing more than $1 billion — was completed in Lincoln, Ala., where Honda Manufacturing of Alabama L.L.C. built a second assembly plant. Other projects include a TDS Automotive auto-parts distribution warehouse in Chesapeake, Va., Collier Metals L.L.C. steel service center in Atlanta, and ConAgra Foods Inc. temperature-controlled distribution warehouse in Emigsville, Pa.

"Nearly 40 percent of new and expanded industries were involved in the distribution of products such as lumber, cement, steel, plastics, food, paper,
chemicals, aggregates and auto parts," said Larry Collingwood, NS assistant vice president of industrial development, in a prepared statement.

During the past 10 years, NS' industrial development department has helped locate or attract expansion of 1,144 industries, representing $24.5 billion in construction projects.
