AREMA adopts smaller board, installs group of governors

The American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA) recently restructured its board, reducing the number of directors from 29 to 20. The smaller board will be responsible for managing and coordinating the association's six functional groups and 30 technical committees.

AREMA also established an eight-member board of governors, which will be responsible for the association's finances, policies and strategic plans. The board comprises AREMA's five corporate officers, as well as Burlington Northern Santa Fe Vice President of Engineering Greg Fox, Amtrak Chief Engineer David Hughes and former CSX Transportation VP of Engineering Tom Schmidt.

The governors were appointed by a special committee of past AREMA presidents to establish the board as quickly as possible, according to a prepared statement. However, future governors will be selected through a nomination/election process.

"It has now been six years since the merger that created AREMA and, as AREMA has evolved, we saw a critical need to streamline some of the policy and planning functions, and develop a system to enable the Technical Committee system to function more effectively," said AREMA President Robert Nash, who serves Canadian Pacific Railway as general manager of signals and communications.

AREMA was formed in October 1997 through the merger of the American Railway Bridge and Building Association, American Railway Engineering Association, Roadmasters and Maintenance-of-Way Association, and functions of Association of American Railroads' Communications and Signals Division.
