Norfolk Southern Corp. recently honored 35 shippers with its 8th annual Thoroughbred Chemical Safety Awards, which recognize a customer's safe chemical handling during rail-car loading and unloading.

Each recipient shipped more than 1,000 carloads of chemicals on NS last year without an incident — combined, the shippers safely handled more than 70,000 carloads without a chemical release.

"Many of these companies are repeat winners [who've] demonstrated that incident-free shipping is attainable," said NS Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer David Goode in a prepared statement.
