BLE requests mediation in contract negotiations with carriers

After reaching an impasse in contract negotiations with National Carriers' Conference Committee (NCCC), Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers recently requested mediation through National Mediation Board. The board expects soon to assign a docket number and mediator to the case.

BLE has been negotiating a contract with NCCC since the summer of 2000.

"In spite of the lengthy delays we have endured during this round of negotiations, we are hopeful that the National Mediation Board's assistance will help bring our negotiations to a conclusion," said BLE International President Don Hahs in a prepared statement.

During negotiations April 29 and 30, BLE offered railroads a proposal addressing disputes on wages, rules, working conditions, and health and welfare issues, but NCCC offered a five-bullet point response that "contained no movement on the part of the carriers," said Hahs.
