On Nov. 13, Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (GWI) reported that its North American railroads last month moved 43,538 carloads, an 18.8 percent increase (6,899 units) compared with October 2001.

However, October carloads decreased 5 percent (1,826 units) compared with last year on a same-railroad basis, which excludes GWI's carloads from Emons Transportation Group Inc. (acquired in February) and Utah Railway (purchased in August).

North American roads moved 2,380 fewer coal carloads but 554 more carloads of other commodities.

Overseas, Australian Railroad Group (ARG), which is half-owned by GWI, last month moved 70,922 carloads, a 9 percent increase (5,840 units) compared with October 2001.

ARG moved 6,322 more carloads of grain and 2,152 more carloads of alumina, which offset a 2,634-carload decline in other commodities and 2,469-carload drop in hook-and-pull traffic.
