Licensing program places security seal on UP's trademarks

With one of the nation's oldest corporate logos, Union Pacific Railroad is taking steps to prevent trademark infringement.

On Dec. 16, the railroad launched a licensing program under which parties interested in using any current or historic UP trademark for commercial or non-profit purposes first must complete a licensing agreement.

UP, which owns trademarks from dozens of former railroads, ran a nationwide advertising campaign in 2002 that highlighted the railroad's 140-year history. UP officials believe the ads increased the railroad's visibility as well as the risk of trademark infringement.

"With this licensing initiative, we hope to … protect Union Pacific trademarks from unauthorized use," said Bob Turner, UP senior vice president or corporate relations, in a prepared statement.

Licensee applications are available on UP's Web site (www.uprr.com) under "General Public/Corporate Information."
