Transportation Communications International Union (TCU) and railroad officials recently set an arbitration schedule to settle their dispute over wages and health insurance for Brotherhood of Railway Carmen Division-represented clerks and carmen.


The union and National Carriers’ Conference Committee (NCCC), which represents 30 U.S. railroads including five Class Is, plan to hold an arbitration hearing the week of Jan. 20 in Washington, D.C., according to a prepared statement.


TCU and NCCC officials had planned to hold the hearing sooner, but both parties need time to prepare written briefs and oral presentations.


On Oct. 2, TCU and NCCC agreed to settle their dispute through binding arbitration under the auspices of National Mediation Board.


The parties, which have been negotiating a national contract since January 2000, had been in contract mediation since October 2001, when NCCC rejected a tentative agreement.
