Retirement beckons for BNSF's Schultz

On Oct. 31, Charles Schultz announced plans to retire from Burlington Northern Santa Fe in mid-2003.

Schultz, BNSF's executive vice president and chief marketing officer since June 1999, has served the railroad for more than 32 years.

"I had always intended to retire at age 55 [and] next May, I’ll be 56," he said in a prepared statement. "However, before I retire, I wanted to put in place critical elements for the on-going success of the marketing department."

During Schultz's tenure, BNSF established a common set of marketing business practices and implemented a more disciplined pricing system.

"Chuck has been instrumental in growing BNSF's intermodal business," said Matthew Rose, BNSF chairman, president and chief executive officer. "As chief information officer for the former Santa Fe, Chuck oversaw the development of the Transportation Support System, and the version BNSF uses today is considered 'best in class.'"
