Canadian National Railway Co. recently donated $1 million to the University of Manitoba to help I.H. Asper School of Business' Transport Institute create an endowed chair in "Sustainable Transport Logistics and Supply-Chain Management."

The business school plans to offer an undergraduate program in logistics, transportation and supply-chain management beginning next year. The university is trying to raise $3 million to establish an endowment for the chair, which would help the school develop graduate programs.

"The transportation industry is the cornerstone of Manitoba's economy, and CN is pleased that this donation will allow the Transport Institute and the Asper School to expand the scope of their programs to meet the needs of the industry," said Keith Creel, CN vice president, Prairie Division, in a prepared statement.

More than 40,000 people hold full-time transportation-related jobs in Manitoba.

"These are secure jobs with above-average wages, and increasingly employers are looking for managers with more advanced training in logistics and transportation," said Transport Institute Director Barry Prentice.
