Florida East Coast Railway (FECR) and Pepsi Bottling Group Inc. recently reached an agreement, under which FECR will provide daily intermodal services to the beverage distributor beginning in November.

The 351-mile regional will move canned soft drinks from Jacksonville, Fla., and bottled beverages from Orlando to Pepsi Bottling Group's Miami plant. The distributor will provide local drayage in Miami and Jacksonville.

A significant amount of Pepsi beverages consumed by South Florida residents will be moved by rail instead of trucks, says Husein Cumber, FECR assistant vice president of public affairs.

FECR and Pepsi Bottling Group conducted test shipments Oct. 9-10 using refurbished 45-foot trailers.

The railroad recently created a dedicated pool of retrofitted trailers for the new service.
